T-Series (company)
Indian record label and film studio founded by Gulshan Kumar.
T-Series, formally known as Super Cassettes Industries Private Limited, is an Indian record label and film studio founded on 11 July 1983 by Gulshan Kumar, who began his career as a fruit juice seller in Delhi. The company initially operated by selling pirated Hindi film songs before transitioning to producing original music, capitalizing on a growing demand for cassette music and loopholes in copyright law that allowed for cover versions. Kumar also identified a market for devotional music, hiring singers to record hymns for elderly Hindus who could not read them, and later filming major Hindu pilgrimages for sale on VHS. The company’s first original film soundtrack was for the 1984 film *Lallu Ram*, but its major breakthrough came with the 1988 Bollywood blockbuster *Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak*, whose soundtrack—composed by Anand–Milind and written by Majrooh Sultanpuri—sold over 8 million units, becoming one of the best-selling Indian albums of the 1980s. T-Series then became a leading label with the 1990 film *Aashiqui*, composed by Nadeem–Shravan, which sold 20 million copies and remains the best-selling Hindi film soundtrack of all time. Gulshan Kumar was murdered by the Mumbai mafia syndicate D-Company on 12 August 1997, after which his son Bhushan Kumar and younger brother Krishan Kumar took over leadership. Today, T-Series is the largest music label in India, holding up to a 35% market share, and has produced over 100 films. On YouTube, its main channel is the most-viewed and second most-subscribed globally, with over 353 billion views and 314 million subscribers as of August 2026, operating a multi-channel network of 43 channels across numerous Indian languages and genres.
