Gemini

Gemini, a constellation of the zodiac, sits in the northern celestial hemisphere. The 2nd-century astronomer Ptolemy listed it among his 48 constellations, and it continues as one of the 88 recognized today. Its Latin name means “twins,” linking it to the mythological pair Castor and Pollux.

The constellation lies between Taurus to the west and Cancer to the east. Auriga and Lynx border it to the north, Monoceros and Canis Minor to the south, and Orion to the southwest. In classical times, the Sun stood in Cancer at the northern solstice (June 21), but axial precession shifted that position into Gemini during the first century AD. By 1990, the solstice point had moved from Gemini into Taurus, where it will stay until the 27th century before shifting into Aries. From now until 2062, the Sun passes through Gemini from June 21 to July 20.

Gemini dominates the winter skies of the northern hemisphere, visible all night during December and January. To find it, look east from Taurus’s V-shaped Hyades cluster and Orion’s Belt; the brightest stars, Castor and Pollux, mark the way. Alternatively, draw an imaginary line from the Pleiades in Taurus to Regulus in Leo—this line, close to the ecliptic, cuts through Gemini just below Castor and Pollux. When the Moon moves through Gemini, its motion is easy to track in a single night: it appears west of the twin stars, then aligns with them, and finally drifts east.

Bayer assigned designations Alpha through Omega and the Latin letters A through g to the constellation’s stars, later adding two stars as b. One star, Psi Geminorum, was moved into Cancer in 1930, though Flamsteed’s designation Psi³ Cancri for it has caused confusion. Gemini holds 85 stars visible to the naked eye. Pollux is the brightest, followed by Castor—though Bayer mistakenly labeled Castor as Alpha in 1603, not carefully distinguishing which was brighter. Despite their mythological twinship, the stars are physically quite different.

Castor (α Gem) is a sextuple system 52 light-years away, appearing as a magnitude 1.6 blue-white star. Two spectroscopic binaries shine at magnitudes 1.9 and 3.0, orbiting every 470 years. A red dwarf, part of the system, is an Algol-type eclipsing binary with a 19.5-hour period, ranging from magnitude 9.3 to 9.8. Pollux (β Gem) is an orange giant of magnitude 1.14, 34 light-years distant, and hosts an extrasolar planet—as do two other Gemini stars, HD 50554 and HD 59686. Alhena (γ Gem) is a blue-white star of magnitude 1.9, 105 light-years away. Wasat (δ Gem) is a long-period binary 59 light-years from Earth: a white primary of magnitude 3.5 and an orange dwarf secondary of magnitude 8.2, with a period over 1,000 years, separable in medium amateur telescopes. Mebsuta (ε Gem) is a double star; its primary is a yellow supergiant of magnitude 3.1, 900 light-years away, with an optical companion of magnitude 9.6 visible in binoculars. Mekbuda (ζ Gem) is a double star whose primary is a Cepheid variable with a 10.2-day period, ranging from magnitude 3.6 to 4.2. This yellow supergiant, 1,200 light-years away, has a radius 60 times the Sun’s and a volume roughly 220,000 times larger; its companion, magnitude 7.6, is visible in binoculars. Propus (η Gem) is a binary 380 light-years away with a 500-year period, only separable in large amateur telescopes. Its primary is a semi-regular red giant varying between magnitude 3.1 and 3.9 over 233 days; the secondary is magnitude 6. κ Gem is a binary 143 light-years away: a yellow giant primary of magnitude 3.6 and an 8th-magnitude secondary, separable only in larger instruments due to the brightness difference. Tejat (μ Gem) is a red giant 230 light-years away, about 100 times the Sun’s diameter. ν Gem is a double star divisible in binoculars: a blue giant primary of magnitude 4.1, 550 light-years away, and an 8th-magnitude secondary. 38 Gem is a binary separable in small amateur telescopes, 84 light-years away, with a white primary of magnitude 4.8 and a yellow secondary of magnitude 7.8. U Gem, a dwarf nova cataclysmic variable, was discovered by J. R. Hind in 1855.

Among deep-sky objects, M35 (NGC 2168) is a large, elongated open cluster of magnitude 5, discovered in 1745 by Swiss astronomer Philippe Loys de Chéseaux. Covering about 0.2 square degrees—the same area as the full moon—it is visible to the unaided eye under dark skies and in binoculars under brighter conditions. Its 200 stars form chains curving through the cluster, which lies 2,800 light-years away. Another open cluster, NGC 2158, is visible in large amateur telescopes; very rich, it lies more than 12,000 light-years from Earth. NGC 2392 is a planetary nebula of magnitude 9.2, located 4,000 light-years away.
