Platanus is a genus comprising a small number of tree species that are the only living members of the family Platanaceae. All mature members are tall, with the Oriental plane (*Platanus orientalis*) serving as the type species. Most species are deciduous, with the notable exception of *P. kerrii*, and in the wild they are primarily found in riparian or other wetland habitats, though they prove drought-tolerant in cultivation. The hybrid London plane (*Platanus × hispanica*) is particularly tolerant of urban conditions and has been widely planted across the temperate world. In English, they are commonly called planes or plane trees; a now-rare former name is plantain tree, while some North American species, especially *Platanus occidentalis*, are called sycamores. The genus name derives from Ancient Greek, referring to *Platanus orientalis*.

The flowers are reduced and borne in globose heads, with male and female flowers separate but on the same plant (monoecious). Male flower-heads fall off after shedding pollen. The fruit is a multiple of achenes forming an aggregate ball, typically 2.5–4 cm in diameter, containing several hundred conical achenes, each with a single seed and a tuft of bristle fibers aiding wind dispersal. Leaves are simple and alternate; in the subgenus *Platanus* they have a palmate outline, with the leaf stalk base completely wrapping around the young stem bud. Mature bark exfoliates easily in irregular patches, producing a mottled appearance, though on old trunks it may thicken and crack instead.

The genus is divided into two subgenera: *Castaneophyllum* (containing only *P. kerrii*) and *Platanus* (all others). Within subgenus *Platanus*, genetic evidence indicates that the Western North American species complex (*P. racemosa*, *P. gentryi*, *P. wrightii*) is more closely related to the Eurasian *P. orientalis* than to other North American species, forming two distinct evolutionary lineages: the Atlantic North American (ANA) clade and the Pacific North American–European (PNA-E) clade. Both lineages have experienced ancient or recent hybridization and introgression, with species such as *P. rzedowskii* and *P. × mexicana* showing genetic and morphological evidence of past contact between these groups.
