Chris Rock, born Christopher Julius Rock on February 7, 1965, in Andrews, South Carolina, is the eldest of seven children. Shortly after his birth, his family moved to Brooklyn, New York, first to Crown Heights and later to the working-class neighborhood of Bedford–Stuyvesant. His mother, Rosalie, worked as a teacher and social worker for people with developmental disabilities, while his father, Julius, was a truck driver for The Daily News and a newspaper deliveryman. Rock has described himself as a “skinny runt” who was bullied from second grade onward after being bused to predominantly white, poor schools in Brooklyn, where he endured beatings from white students. He dropped out of James Madison High School at age 17, later earning a GED, and briefly attended Kingsborough Community College. His stand-up career began in 1984 at New York City’s Catch a Rising Star, where Eddie Murphy saw his act and mentored him, giving Rock his first film role in *Beverly Hills Cop II* (1987). Rock gained national exposure as a cast member on *Saturday Night Live* from 1990 to 1993, part of a group known as the “Bad Boys of SNL.” After being effectively fired from the show, he appeared on *In Living Color* and wrote, produced, and starred in the film *CB4* (1993).
