He was raised initially in the Bronx before his family moved to Long Beach, New York, on Long Island. His father owned a music store and was a jazz promoter and record executive, while his mother was a housewife. Crystal is Jewish, with ancestors from Austria, Russia, and Lithuania, and he had a bar mitzvah at a local temple.
