Playing career
Greaves grew up in Cambridge, Ontario, playing for minor league teams in the area, including the Cambridge Hawks. His performance there led to selection by the Barrie Colts in the third round, 56th overall, of the 2017 Ontario Hockey League draft. After his OHL draft, he spent the following season with the Guelph Hurricanes of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League before joining the Colts for the 2018–19 season. In his rookie OHL season, Greaves was named to the league's First All-Rookie Team. He played two seasons with Barrie, sharing goaltending duties nearly equally with Kai Edmonds in his first year and with Artūrs Šilovs in his second, despite expectations that he would be the starter. The OHL cancelled its 2020–21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Ontario; Greaves did not sign with any team outside the province or internationally during that stoppage, so he did not play in what would have been his third OHL season. Although he was never selected in an NHL draft, he signed a professional contract with the Cleveland Monsters of the American Hockey League, the top affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets. He made his professional debut on October 23, 2021, recording 40 saves in a 2–1 win over the Belleville Senators. His first professional season was split between the Monsters and the Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL. Despite not being the primary goalie in the Blue Jackets' prospect system, his play impressed the team, and he signed a three-year, entry-level contract with Columbus on February 20, 2022.
