Gameplay
Grid 2 features real world locations including Paris and motor vehicles spanning four decades. The handling system, called TrueFeel, aims to balance realism and accessibility. Races lack a first person cockpit view. Drivers receive certain cars before some race modes and unlock others through vehicle challenges. Car liveries can be customized using preset graphic designs with colors or shades. World Series Racing (WSR) is a competitive event on tracks across continents. LiveRoutes mode dynamically changes the circuit with no track map. Race types include Race, Time Attack, Drift, Eliminator, Checkpoint, Touge, and Vehicle Challenges. The player is a new driver enlisted by investor Patrick Callahan to help launch WSR by challenging racing clubs in North America, Europe, and Asia.
Reception
Grid 2 received generally favorable reviews on Metacritic. IGN praised the graphics, audio, and gameplay, calling it a fun racer with a well-curated car list and great sense of speed. Game Informer lauded the World Series Racing mode, alternate track routes, and multiplayer, but noted it was not particularly innovative. PC Gamer praised the realistic AI and variety of modes while criticizing the threadbare story. Destructoid was disappointed by the lack of sim gameplay, citing lazy design, unfair AI, and irritating narration. Push Square called it a fun but safe racer lacking impact and identity. GameSpot praised audio, visuals, handling, multiplayer, and event variety, but noted a lack of difficulty customization and occasional frame drops. GamesRadar+ liked the intensity, visuals, competition variety, and content amount, with minor issues including no cockpit view and initially jarring handling. The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences nominated Grid 2 for Racing Game of the Year at the 17th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards.
