Gameplay
The game runs on a new version of the EGO engine, improving physics models. A 'Pro Season' mode removes the HUD and all assists, including traction control, ABS, and transmission, at the hardest difficulty. Voice recognition software on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One lets players communicate with their race engineer for information, weather updates, tyre status, and to request tyre changes or wing adjustments. The AI was noted for frequently causing wrecks or making mistakes, drawing mixed reactions from critics.
Development and release
Codemasters broke from tradition with F1 2015, launching it in July 2015 instead of the usual September or October window. The prior game, F1 2014, was essentially a placeholder until this title arrived. A fresh game engine boosted visual fidelity and artificial intelligence performance. The title hit Windows worldwide and PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in Europe on July 10, 2015, with a North American console release on July 21. Feral Interactive later handled a Linux version, which came out on May 26, 2016.
Reception
F1 2015 received mixed reviews. The PlayStation 4 version scored 65 out of 100 on Metacritic and 65.02% on GameRankings. IGN rated it 5.8/10, praising graphics and controls but criticizing the lack of game modes and overly aggressive AI. Metro commended the weather effects. The PC version scored 61 on Metacritic and 58.17% on GameRankings. The game reached number one on the Chart-Track sales chart.
