Features
The game includes in-game commentary from David Croft and Anthony Davidson. An expanded team management mode gives players more control over research and development of car parts, with engine components and gearboxes subject to wear and grid penalties for exceeding component quotas. The FIA supports F1 2017 as an eSports platform, following similar moves by Formula E and the World Rally Championship. Various race formats are available after commercial holders expressed interest in trialing potential formats via gaming. Classic cars, last included in F1 2013, return. A competition allowed players to design racing helmets, with seven winning designs included. It was the first game used in the Formula One eSports Series, which debuted in 2017.
Reception
Critics largely welcomed F1 2017. Autosport highlighted how it deepened the features first seen in the previous year's game. The Daily Telegraph considered it among Codemasters' finest work, while IGN noted its accurate representation of the sport. GameSpot's take matched Autosport's praise, and GamesMaster called it a "superb, technical racer," adding that fans would enjoy the career mode but find the classic cars lacking. Commercially, it landed at number two on the UK PS4 chart, behind Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, and took the top spot on Xbox One. In Japan, the PS4 version sold 7,190 copies in its first week, ranking eleventh. It reached second in Australia and fourth in New Zealand. Alphr placed it sixth on its 2017 list of best PS4 racing games. The title earned nominations for IGN's Best Racing Game of 2017 and for eSports Game of the Year at the 2018 SXSW Gaming Awards, ultimately winning Best Racing Game at the 2018 Independent Game Developers' Association Awards.
