Background
Born Chan Kong-sang on 7 April 1954, he trained in acrobatics, martial arts and acting as one of the Seven Little Fortunes at the China Drama Academy and entered Hong Kong cinema as a stuntman. Snake in the Eagle's Shadow (1978) was his breakthrough, followed by Drunken Master (1978) and The Young Master (1980), and he directed his first film, The Fearless Hyena, in 1979. Project A (1983) founded the Jackie Chan Stunt Team and fixed his signature mix of dangerous stunts, martial arts and slapstick, carried on in Wheels on Meals and Police Story.
Rumble in the Bronx (1995) brought him into the North American mainstream, and Rush Hour (1998), as Chief Inspector Lee, made him a Hollywood star, with two sequels to follow. In 2010 he starred with Jaden Smith in The Karate Kid, which won him the Favorite Buttkicker award at the 2011 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. At the New York premiere of Karate Kid: Legends in 2025, he and co-star Ralph Macchio received honorary black belts from the World Karate Federation.
Films he has appeared in have grossed over $6 billion worldwide, and CZ12 (2012) earned him two Guinness World Records, for the most stunts by a living actor and the most credits in one movie.
