Background
She grew up in Tomi Village in Okinawa Prefecture, a childhood friend of Chozen Toguchi, and as a teenager lived with her Aunt Yukie while teaching the village girls to dance. She longed to dance professionally, but with no dance schools nearby and no wish to leave home she doubted she ever could.
In 1985 she welcomes Mr. Miyagi and Daniel to her home when Miyagi returns to Okinawa after 45 years to see his dying father. She and Daniel grow close as she teaches him O-bon dance steps, which draws mockery from Chozen, and after Chozen beats Daniel she throws a tomato at his back. When Daniel defeats Chozen and Chozen loses the will to live, Kumiko and Sato help him find a purpose again.
She later joins the Hijikata Tatsumi Dance Company and tours the world, returning home to nurse her sick aunt. After Yukie dies she inherits the house, settles in Okinawa and teaches children to dance; despite many proposals she never marries.
