Peresyp

A Russian term for a mouth bar separating a liman from the sea.

A peresyp (пересыпь) is a Russian hydrological term for a mouth bar, a narrow sandbar that rises above water level and separates a liman (a Black Sea estuary lagoon) from the open sea. Unlike a tombolo, it usually has one or more channels (girlo) connecting the lagoon to the sea. It forms from sand, gravel, or crushed shells via longshore drift or transverse sediment transport, and can result when two spits grow and meet. The Black Sea peresyp ecosystem is unique.
