Miguel Layún
Mexican right-back who won league titles in Mexico and Portugal, and was the first Mexican to play in Serie A.
Miguel Arturo Layún Prado (born 25 June 1988) is a Mexican former professional footballer who played as a right-back. Over the course of his 17-year career, Layún represented nine clubs across five countries. He is best remembered for his time at Club América, where he won three league titles. During his stint in Europe, he became the first Mexican footballer to play in Serie A. Later, he captured a Primeira Liga championship with Porto, and upon returning to Mexico, he added another league title with Monterrey. An international since 2013, Layún represented Mexico at the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cups, the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, and two CONCACAF Gold Cups, winning the 2015 edition.

Layún began his professional career in 2006 with Gallos Caliente Tijuana, a Querétaro reserve team in Primera 'A'. He then moved to Veracruz, debuting in the Primera División in April 2007. In 2009, he transferred to Italian club Atalanta for €625,000, becoming the first Mexican to play in Serie A. He joined Club América in December 2009, winning his first league title in Clausura 2013 and captaining the club to another title in Apertura 2014. After a stint with Watford in England, he moved to Porto on loan in 2015, later signing permanently, and won the Primeira Liga. He had loan spells at Sevilla and a transfer to Villarreal before returning to Mexico with Monterrey in 2019, winning another league title. He returned to América in 2021 and retired after winning the Apertura 2023 final against Tigres UANL.

Two touches, a burst of speed that seemed to compress the forty metres between midfield and the box into ten, and then the cross — low, driven, cutting in front of the keeper's feet. The net rippled. The East Stand detonated. He jogged back to his position, wiped his brow with his sleeve, and said nothing. He didn't need to. The hair was already drying in the Azteca night air, and the crowd was still screaming his name.
