Hernández began his senior club career at age 18 in 2006, playing for Guadalajara, where he won the Primera División. In 2010, he signed for Manchester United, becoming the club's first Mexican player. During his five years with United, he amassed over 150 appearances, scoring 59 goals, winning two Premier League titles, the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year in his first season, and reaching the 2011 UEFA Champions League Final. He departed on loan to Real Madrid in 2014, winning the FIFA Club World Cup, and in 2015 joined Bayer Leverkusen on a permanent deal. He later played for West Ham United, Sevilla, and LA Galaxy. In 2024, he rejoined his boyhood club Guadalajara. He is Mexico's all-time leading goalscorer and debuted for the national team in September 2009.

The floodlights at the Azteca hummed like a living thing. It was the late minutes of a Friday-night Apertura fixture, the score knifed at 1-1, and the crowd had settled into that tense, expectant murmur that only a packed east stand can produce. Chicharito, still in his early twenties, tucked his arms tighter and sprinted the full length of the right channel. A defender slid; he was past him before the boot hit the turf. The cross came in lazy, high, and he rose—just a half-step ahead of the centre-back—and met it with a header that dipped over the keeper and kissed the back of the net.

The east stand detonated. He ran, arms wide, toward the corner flag, and the wave of hands and scarves swallowed him whole. Back in the dressing room, the captain slapped his back and muttered something about "the little pea again." Chicharito grinned, still breathing hard, and said nothing. He didn't need to. The Azteca had already told the story.

Hernández is commonly known by the nickname Chicharito, translated as 'little pea', a diminutive of his father's nickname Chícharo. He is also referred to as CH14. In December 2023, while streaming on Twitch, he adopted the nickname ChichaGod (or ChichaDios in Spanish).
