Manor Lords
A medieval city-builder blending organic settlement growth with real-time tactical warfare.
Manor Lords is a medieval city-building and real-time tactics video game created by Grzegorz "Greg" Styczeń under his studio Slavic Magic, and published by Hooded Horse. It launched in early access on April 26, 2024, after becoming the most-wishlisted game on Steam before release, with over two million wishlists.
The game draws inspiration from late 14th-century Franconia and blends organic city-building with real-time tactical combat and colony simulation. It offers five modes: Rise to Prosperity (combat-free), Restoring the Peace, On the Edge, A Duel, and Fractured Realm, each with varying levels of combat and enemies. Players can customize starting positions, maps, threats, and their character’s name and coat of arms from a wide selection. The default view is birds-eye, but a third-person camera lets players walk through their streets.
City-building focuses on expanding a small settlement by gathering resources, managing supply chains, and expanding trade networks while maintaining internal cohesion. Roads are mostly curved, and houses are built without fixed zoning grids seen in SimCity or Cities: Skylines. Building mechanics reflect how real medieval towns grew around trade routes and landscape features. Each season brings unique demands, and buildings and workplaces require maintenance for efficiency. Castle construction and fortifications add both defense and aesthetics, aiding gameplay and settlement growth.
The financial system is complex, requiring management of six types of taxation. Historical accuracy means balancing quick growth against environmental effects like weather, soil exhaustion, and deforestation. Players handle imports and exports, a yearly King’s tax, bandit raids and loot, and taxes and tithes that affect villager satisfaction and the lord’s income.
Warfare includes bandit skirmishes, territorial expansion, fights against AI enemies and lords, and a boss battle against an expanding Baron territory. Players can rent temporary troops with different equipment and skill levels, train a personal retinue, or arm villagers. Real-time tactical battles account for fatigue, weather, and equipment. A diplomacy system lets players use influence or threats to sway other AI lords.
Development was funded early through Patreon donations. In 2021, Styczeń received an Epic MegaGrant. The game was initially built in Unreal Engine 4.

Lore & Background
Manor Lords was created by solo developer Grzegorz "Greg" Styczeń under the studio Slavic Magic. Early development was funded partly through Patreon donations, and in 2021 Styczeń received a grant from Epic Games through the Epic MegaGrants program. The game was initially built with Unreal Engine 4. An announcement trailer released in July 2020 set a modest wishlist target of 14,000, but anticipation grew to over two million wishlists by January 2024 and over three million by release. Originally planned for late 2023, the early access launch was delayed to April 26, 2024 for additional bugfixing and polish. In June 2024, the game switched to Unreal Engine 5, with the transition completed by August 22 in version 0.7.987. A major update on October 2, 2025 overhauled internal code and gameplay, adding two new gamemodes, four new maps, and a revamped perk system. Major Update #8 in August 2026 added a Wide Valley map, cows and calves, oats, cider, mead and cheese production, new construction systems, seasonal assignments, AI improvements, and balancing changes.
Reader's Guide
Manor Lords is notable for its organic city-building approach, avoiding fixed zoning grids in favor of curved roads and houses shaped by landscape and trade routes. Players manage six types of taxation, supply chains, trade networks, and seasonal demands while contending with environmental degradation such as soil exhaustion and deforestation. The game offers five modes: Rise to prosperity (combat-free), Restoring the peace, On the edge, A duel, and Fractured Realm, each with varying combat intensity. Real-time tactical battles account for fatigue, weather, and equipment, and a diplomacy system allows interaction with AI lords. Players can customize starting positions, maps, threats, character, name, and coat of arms. A third-person camera mode lets players roam streets. Reception to early demos was very positive, with praise for its complexity and historical accuracy, though some gameplay concessions were made. Criticism focused on quickly consumable content, lack of clear objectives, unfinished endgame, absence of narrative, and underdeveloped combat and policies. Despite this, Manor Lords sold over one million copies during its launch weekend, surpassing three million by February 2025 and four million by August 2026.
