Stage

Dourif began acting in school productions and community theater, joining the Huntington Community Players while at Marshall University. In New York, he studied with Sanford Meisner and worked with Marshall Mason and Lanford Wilson at the Circle Repertory Company. In the early 1970s, he appeared off-Broadway and in Woodstock, New York, in plays including The Ghost Sonata, The Doctor in Spite of Himself, and When You Comin' Back, Red Ryder?, where director Miloš Forman spotted him and cast him in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

After a three-decade stage absence, Dourif returned in 2013 to star with Amanda Plummer in an Off-Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams' The Two-Character Play, which ran from June 19 to September 29, 2013. He explained he broke his 29-year hiatus because Plummer was involved. The play had several cancellations, including one due to a death in Dourif's family; Plummer refused to perform without him despite an understudy being available.
