Background
The New York Knicks took a 2–0 series lead over the Chicago Bulls in the Conference Finals. Michael Jordan, after shooting 3–18 in Game 3, scored 54 points in Game 4 to even the series, surpassing Sam Jones's 51 against the 1967 Knicks as the most points ever scored against the Knicks in a playoff game. The Bulls won Game 5 97–94 at Madison Square Garden and clinched the series at home in Game 6.
In Game 6 Patrick Ewing had 26 points and 13 rebounds for New York; Jordan had 25 points and 9 assists and Horace Grant 11 rebounds for Chicago. This was the fifth playoff meeting between these two teams, with the Bulls winning the first four meetings.
