Background

San Francisco outgained Chicago 387 yards to 186, and the Bears managed only 37 passing yards; quarterback Steve Fuller completed 13 of 22 passes for 87 yards and was sacked nine times. The first half stayed close: Bob Thomas missed a 41-yard field goal on Chicago's opening drive, Ray Wersching kicked two field goals, and safety Gary Fencik intercepted Joe Montana twice, once in the end zone. In the third quarter Wendell Tyler finished an all-running drive with a 9-yard touchdown, Montana later threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Freddie Solomon, and Wersching added a 34-yard field goal.

Chicago reached this game through the divisional round on December 30, 1984, beating the Washington Redskins 23-19 at RFK Stadium and ending Washington's bid for a third straight NFC title. In that game Walter Payton threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Pat Dunsmore on a halfback option, Willie Gault scored on a 75-yard catch, and Payton ran for 104 yards, a career postseason high.
