Background
Gould went undrafted out of Penn State in 2005, was cut by New England and Baltimore and was working construction in Mill Hall, Pennsylvania, when the Bears signed him on October 8 after Doug Brien was hurt. The next year he made 26 straight field goals to break Kevin Butler's team record, was a first-team All-Pro and the fans' Pro Bowl pick, and his 49-yard overtime kick against Seattle on January 14, 2007, gave Chicago its first divisional-round win since 1988 on the way to Super Bowl XLI.
In December 2008 he kicked overtime winners in consecutive games, only the fourth kicker to do so, and a five-year, $15.5 million extension that May had made him the league's highest-paid kicker. A 58-yarder against Cincinnati in 2013 set the Bears' distance record, and that year he became the second player in team history to pass 1,000 points. A 30-yard field goal against Kansas City in 2015 took him past Butler as the club's all-time scorer, and his 33 field goals that season were the most ever by a Bears kicker.
He was released in a cost-saving move on September 4, 2016, and went on to kick for the Giants and San Francisco 49ers, finishing as the 10th-highest scorer in NFL history. His seven seasons of 100 or more points remain a Bears record.
