Background
The Bears came in as 8-5 favourites a few weeks after their 73-0 title-game win over Washington. George Halas was in hospital after an appendectomy, so Luke Johnsos coached the Bears, while Ray Flaherty of Washington coached the All-Stars. Players from Stanford and Nebraska, who were about to meet in the Rose Bowl, watched from the stands; Nebraska used the game to study the Bears' T formation, which Stanford coach and former Bears assistant Clark Shaughnessy also ran. Brooklyn quarterback Ace Parker was voted in but declined because of injuries, which led to a dispute with NFL president Carl Storck. The first two all-star games, in January 1939 and January 1940, had featured the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers.
