Background
To get there the Bears first had to win the NFL's first divisional playoff game: they and the Green Bay Packers had both finished 10-1, so the two met at Wrigley Field on December 14, and Chicago won 33-14. In the final, the Bears kicked three first-half field goals to lead 9-6, the Giants tied it early in the second half, and Chicago then scored four unanswered touchdowns. The win made the Bears the first team of the championship-game era to win two titles in a row and was the franchise's fifth league title. Ray McLean's drop-kicked extra point near the end was the last successful NFL drop kick until Doug Flutie in 2006.
