Background
The season opened in Decatur, where Staley Field seated only 1,500, and the team moved to Cubs Park (now Wrigley Field), a 14,000-seat venue, in time for its third game. A. E. Staley had suggested the move himself: the company found the team, with its 25 players on the payroll, too costly, and offered Halas $5,000 to keep the Staleys name for one more year. A contract handing the team to Halas was signed on October 5, 1921, with Edward "Dutch" Sternaman made a partner. Sternaman was the team's star again, scoring 32 points; Gaylord Stinchcomb led with four rushing touchdowns and Halas caught three touchdown passes. Of the 19 players dressed for the league opener, 18 had served in the military during World War I. The next year the club became the Chicago Bears.
