Martin Heinrich Klaproth (1743–1817) was a German chemist who spent most of his career as an apothecary before moving into academia. Born in Wernigerode, the son of a tailor, he attended the local Latin school for four years. At sixteen he began an apprenticeship in Quedlinburg, later training in pharmacies in Hanover, Berlin, and Danzig. In 1771 he returned to Berlin to manage the business of Valentin Rose the Elder, and after Rose’s death he passed examinations to become senior manager. Following his marriage in 1780, he purchased his own establishment, the Apotheke zum Baren. Between 1782 and 1800 he published eighty-four papers based on research conducted in its laboratory, making his shop the second-largest apothecary in Berlin and the most productive artisanal chemical research center in Europe. He also served as assessor of pharmacy for the examining board of the Ober-Collegium Medicum from 1782, and in 1787 became lecturer in chemistry to the Prussian Royal Artillery. In 1788 he joined the Berlin Academy of Sciences as an unsalaried member, becoming its salaried director in 1800. He then sold the apothecary and convinced the university to build a new laboratory, moving his equipment there upon its completion in 1802. When the University of Berlin was founded in 1810, he was selected as professor of chemistry. Klaproth was a major systematizer of analytical chemistry and an independent inventor of gravimetric analysis. His meticulous attention to detail and refusal to overlook discrepancies in results led to improvements in apparatus use. He discovered uranium and zirconium in 1789, and was involved in the discovery or co-discovery of titanium (1795), strontium (1793), cerium (1803), and chromium (1797), while also confirming tellurium and beryllium (both 1798). He was recognized internationally by the Royal Society, the Institut de France, and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. He died in Berlin on New Year’s Day 1817.
