Carl Wilhelm Scheele (9 December 1742 – 21 May 1786) was a German-Swedish pharmaceutical chemist. He discovered oxygen, though Joseph Priestley published the finding first, and identified the elements molybdenum, tungsten, barium, nitrogen, and chlorine. Scheele also discovered several organic acids, including tartaric, oxalic, uric, lactic, and citric acids, as well as hydrofluoric, hydrocyanic, and arsenic acids. Throughout his life, he preferred speaking German to Swedish, as German was common among Swedish pharmacists. Doctors attributed his death to mercury poisoning from his lifelong work as a chemist.

Born in Stralsund, in western Pomerania—then a Swedish Dominion in the Holy Roman Empire—Scheele was the son of Joachim Christian Scheele, a grain dealer and brewer, and Margaretha Eleanore Warnekros. Friends of his parents taught him to read prescriptions and understand chemical symbols. At fourteen, he was sent to Gothenburg as an apprentice pharmacist to Martin Andreas Bauch, a family friend, for eight years. During this time, he conducted experiments late into the night and studied works by Nicolas Lemery, Caspar Neumann, Johann von Löwenstern-Kunckel, and Georg Ernst Stahl, whose phlogiston theory heavily influenced Scheele’s later ideas.

After working under apothecary C. M. Kjellström in Malmö, Scheele met Anders Jahan Retzius, a lecturer at the University of Lund. In Stockholm, he discovered tartaric acid and, with Retzius, studied the relation of quicklime to calcium carbonate. In 1770, he became director of the laboratory at a major pharmacy in Uppsala, supplying chemicals to Professor Torbern Bergman. Their friendship began when Scheele solved a reaction involving melted saltpetre and acetic acid that Bergman and his assistant could not resolve; further study of this reaction led to Scheele’s discovery of oxygen. In 1775, he was elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. He later managed a pharmacy in Köping, where he established his own business and conducted research that produced many important papers. Isaac Asimov called him "hard-luck Scheele" because several of his chemical discoveries were later credited to others.
