Carl Bosch (1874–1940) was a German chemist and engineer, Nobel laureate, and pioneer of high-pressure industrial chemistry. This breakthrough made possible the mass production of synthetic fertilizers and explosives. Bosch also played a key role in the founding of IG Farben, at one point the world's largest chemical company.
Born in Cologne to a successful gas and plumbing supplier, Bosch was the son of Carl Friedrich Alexander Bosch and nephew of Robert Bosch, the inventor of the spark plug and founder of the Bosch company. After studying at the Königlich Technische Hochschule in Charlottenburg and the University of Leipzig, he earned his doctorate in organic chemistry under Johannes Wislicenus in 1898. The following year, he began work at BASF, then Germany’s largest chemical and dye firm. Between 1909 and 1913, Bosch transformed Fritz Haber’s small-scale laboratory demonstration of nitrogen fixation into the industrial-scale Haber–Bosch process, enabling the mass production of synthetic nitrate. His key contributions included designing equipment capable of withstanding extreme gas pressures and high temperatures, developing large compressors and safe high-pressure furnaces, and finding a more practical catalyst than the scarce osmium and expensive uranium Haber had used. He also solved challenges in producing pure hydrogen feedstock and in safely cleaning and processing the resulting ammonia. The first full-scale plant was built in Oppau, Germany. This work earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1931, shared with Friedrich Bergius. After World War I, Bosch extended high-pressure techniques to produce synthetic fuel via the Bergius process and methanol. In 1925, he helped found IG Farben and became its first head. He received the Siemens-Ring in 1924. In the early 1930s, Bosch attempted to stop Nazi attacks on IG Farben’s synthetic fuel project, and in 1933 the regime granted the company price and production guarantees. However, Bosch opposed Nazi autarkic and repressive policies, leading to his gradual marginalization; by 1935, his role as chairman had become largely ceremonial. A critic of anti-Semitism, he fell into depression and alcoholism, and died in Heidelberg in 1940.
