Luis Federico Leloir
Luis Federico Leloir was an Argentine physician and biochemist awarded the 1970 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for discovering the metabolic pathways through which carbohydrates are synthesized and converted into energy. Born in Paris in 1906, his father had traveled from Buenos Aires for medical treatment but died before Leloir was born. His family returned to Argentina in 1908, where he grew up on a large coastal property called El Tuyú, originally purchased by his grandparents from Spain’s Basque Country. His early education included schools in Buenos Aires and a brief period in England, though his grades were unremarkable and he abandoned architectural studies in Paris. During the 1920s, he invented salsa golf by mixing ketchup and mayonnaise for prawns; he later joked that patenting it would have funded his research.
Leloir obtained Argentine citizenship and entered the University of Buenos Aires medical department, passing his anatomy exam only after four attempts. He earned his diploma in 1932, then worked in hospitals but found he could do little for patients before modern therapies existed. In 1933, he met Bernardo Houssay, who guided his doctoral thesis on suprarenal glands and carbohydrate metabolism. After winning a prize for the best thesis, Leloir studied at Cambridge under Frederick Gowland Hopkins, focusing on enzymes and succinic dehydrogenase. He returned to Buenos Aires in 1937, married Amelia Zuberbuhler in 1943, and they had a daughter. Political turmoil forced Houssay’s expulsion from the university, and Leloir fled to the United States, working with Carl and Gerty Cori in St. Louis and with David Green at Columbia. Green inspired him to establish his own research in Argentina. Leloir became director of the private Fundación Instituto Campomar, where his work on sugar nucleotides and carbohydrate metabolism advanced understanding of galactosemia. He died in 1987 and is buried in La Recoleta Cemetery, Buenos Aires.
