John Polanyi

John Charles Polanyi (born 23 January 1929) is a German-born Canadian chemist who shared the 1986 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on chemical reaction dynamics. He was born in Berlin into the prominent Hungarian Polányi family; his father, Michael, was a chemist and philosopher, and his uncle, Karl, was an economic historian. The family emigrated to Britain in 1933 due to the persecution of Jews under Adolf Hitler. During World War II, at age eleven, Polanyi was sent to Canada for safety, attending the University of Toronto Schools. He returned to Britain, completed his education at the University of Manchester, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1949 and a PhD in 1952. His doctoral research, supervised by Ernest Warhurst, measured chemical bond strengths using thermal dissociation. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Research Council in Ottawa (1952–1954) working with Edgar William Richard Steacie and in Gerhard Herzberg’s spectroscopy lab, he spent two years as a research associate at Princeton University.
Polanyi joined the University of Toronto as a lecturer in 1956, becoming a full professor by 1962 and later University Professor Emeritus. His early research at Toronto, with graduate student Kenneth Cashion, led to discoveries about chemiluminescence from excited molecules, first published in 1958. His work focused on the mechanics of chemical reactions and the transition state. After encountering the 1986 Nobel laureates in physics, who developed scanning tunneling microscopy, Polanyi adopted this technology to observe chemical reactions at the molecular scale. His lab now uses four such microscopes. Beyond science, he is active in public policy, especially regarding nuclear weapons, and is considered one of “The Martians,” a group of prominent Hungarian scientists who emigrated in the early twentieth century. He has received numerous honors, including the Wolf Prize in Chemistry and 33 honorary degrees.
