Jacobus Henricus van 't Hoff Jr. was a Dutch physical chemist whose theoretical work reshaped chemistry. He is best known for winning the first Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1901, awarded for his discoveries concerning the laws of chemical dynamics and osmotic pressure in solutions. His research laid the groundwork for modern theories of chemical affinity, equilibrium, kinetics, and thermodynamics. Van 't Hoff is also regarded as one of the three founders of physical chemistry, alongside Svante Arrhenius and Wilhelm Ostwald; together they established the first dedicated journal for the field, the *Zeitschrift für physikalische Chemie*, in 1887.
His earliest major contribution came in organic chemistry. In 1874, he published a pamphlet proposing that the four bonds of a carbon atom are directed toward the corners of a regular tetrahedron. This three-dimensional model explained optical activity and the existence of isomers, founding the field of stereochemistry. The French chemist Joseph Le Bel independently reached the same conclusion. Van 't Hoff also predicted the correct structures of allenes and cumulenes, including their axial chirality, in 1875. Initially met with harsh criticism, notably from Hermann Kolbe, his ideas gained acceptance by 1880 through support from prominent chemists like Johannes Wislicenus and Viktor Meyer.
In physical chemistry, his 1884 work *Études de Dynamique chimique* introduced graphical methods for determining reaction order and applied thermodynamics to chemical equilibria, also refining the concept of chemical affinity. In 1886, he demonstrated that dilute solutions behave analogously to gases, and later provided a physical basis for the Arrhenius equation. His career included professorships at the University of Amsterdam and, from 1896, at the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin, where his studies of salt deposits aided Prussia’s chemical industry. He died of tuberculosis in 1911 at age 58.
