Lore & Background

It was the first European Cup final played in Russia, and only the third between two clubs from the same country. It fell in the 50th anniversary year of the Munich air disaster and the 40th of United's first European Cup.

Reader's Guide

More than 67,000 people watched in the stadium and over 17.5 million on television in the UK and Ireland. Chelsea reached the final again in 2012 and won it.

Cristiano Ronaldo headed United ahead in the 26th minute and Frank Lampard equalised just before half-time. Didier Drogba was sent off for slapping Nemanja Vidić four minutes from the end of extra time. In the shoot-out Ronaldo missed, giving John Terry the chance to win it, but Terry slipped and hit the post; Edwin van der Sar then saved from Nicolas Anelka to win the cup for United.
