Background
Leicester, the holders, were aiming to become the first side to retain the trophy. In the first leg on 15 March 1965 at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea twice took the lead through Bobby Tambling and a Terry Venables penalty, Leicester equalised both times through Colin Appleton and Jimmy Goodfellow, and McCreadie's 81st-minute goal won it 3–2. The second leg at Filbert Street on 5 April 1965 finished 0–0.
First leg
The first leg was played on 15 March 1965 at Chelsea's home ground, Stamford Bridge. Chelsea took the lead twice, first through Bobby Tambling and then via a penalty from captain Terry Venables, but Leicester City equalised each time, with goals from defender Colin Appleton and forward Jimmy Goodfellow. With ten minutes remaining, Chelsea's Eddie McCreadie collected the ball near his own penalty area and ran sixty yards, dribbling past several Leicester players before scoring past goalkeeper Gordon Banks to make the final score 3–2. Chelsea played most of the match with only ten men because Allan Young, making his first and only appearance of the season, suffered an early injury; substitutions were not permitted. McCreadie, normally a left-back, was deployed as an emergency forward due to an injury to Barry Bridges.
