Background

Yonezu's earlier single "Kick Back", the opening theme for the Chainsaw Man anime, achieved global success and became the first Japanese-language song to earn a Gold certification from the RIAA. On July 4, 2025, Yonezu announced he had recorded "Iris Out" for the film. The release date was set for September 24 as a double A-side with an untitled track, later revealed on August 14 as "Jane Doe", a collaboration with Hikaru Utada that served as the film's ending theme.

Release

The digital release of "Iris Out" occurred on September 15, 2025, with the physical double A-side single arriving on September 24. Three editions were issued: regular, Iris Out, and Jane Doe. The Iris Out edition included an acrylic stand and a Polaroid of the character Reze, while the Jane Doe edition contained a DVD with the "Kick Back" music video and a live performance. First press copies of all variants featured a lottery serial number for Yonezu's 2026 Ghost Tour.

Live performances

Yonezu debuted "Iris Out" at the 76th NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen, recorded at the former Tokyo Expressway. The performance began with him in a telephone booth listening to Hikaru Utada's chorus from "Jane Doe", then moved to an LED catwalk with female dancers. Approximately 100 dancers took part; during the transition from the first chorus to the second verse, he rode a shark vehicle. He finished alongside the girl group Hana, thanking viewers and wishing a happy new year as fireworks appeared.
