The single, which tells of a rocker whose guitar is misdirected to Kentucky, reached number 10 on the UK Singles Chart. Background and lyrics

The song describes a musician who realizes his guitar is missing halfway to Memphis and spends a month tracking it down. Upon recovery, a stranger scolds him for being neglectful and self-centered, saying "rock-n-rollers; you're all the same." In the original version, the stranger is called a "spade"; later versions substitute "dude." The lyrics convey a weariness with the rock and roll lifestyle, including the strain of constant touring and low public opinion of rock singers. This is reflected in the chorus, which repeats variations such as "you look like a star, but you're still on the dole" and "you look like a star, but you're really out on parole." The song may have been based on an actual event involving guitarist Mick Ralphs. It was used in the films Breaking the Waves and Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. The B-side, "Ballad of Mott the Hoople (26 March 1972, Zürich)," also mentions the loss of Ralphs's guitar, with lyrics including "Mick lost his guitar." Hunter later stated it was the first song he composed on "black keys."
