Original version

Iain Sutherland recalled writing "Arms of Mary" at the family farmhouse in the Stoke-on-Trent village of Stockton Brook. The opening line, "the lights shine down the valley," came from looking down through the village of Endon in the Churnet Valley. The song first appeared on the September 1975 album Reach for the Sky, which was the Sutherland Brothers and Quiver's debut release on CBS Records. After the unsuccessful lead single "Ain't Too Proud," "Arms of Mary" was released as a single in spring 1976 in both the UK and the US, giving the group their UK chart debut. A performance on Top of the Pops broadcast 8 May 1976 helped boost the track ten places to No. 6 on the UK Singles Chart dated 15 May 1976, with a No. 5 peak the following week. The song was also an international success, spending four weeks at No. 1 in Ireland and three weeks at No. 1 in the Netherlands, as well as two weeks at No. 1 on the Dutch charts for Belgium. However, it did not become the American hit the group had hoped for, peaking at No. 81 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1976.

Chilliwack version

In 1978, Canadian band Chilliwack recorded "Arms of Mary" for their seventh album, titled Lights from the Valley after the song's opening lyric. The track was the album's lead single and was recorded at the suggestion of Marc Gilutin, who had been brought in by Mushroom Records to co-produce the group after the label rejected two sets of self-produced, self-penned tracks that Chilliwack had submitted for their seventh album. Lights from the Valley became the only Chilliwack album not entirely self-produced by the group, and "Arms of Mary" was the first non-original song to serve as a Chilliwack single since the band had been rebranded from The Collectors; it would prove to be the only such single. Band mainstay Bill Henderson recalled that he and his bandmates were unhappy with an "outside song" being a Chilliwack single, stating that once a recording career is launched, artists are supposed to write their own material, a standard he attributed to the Beatles. The group would only ever record one other song not penned by a member: "In Love With A Look" (Myers/Jalananda), also on Lights from the Valley. Reportedly, "Arms of Mary" was playlisted by every key Canadian AM radio station except the most influential, CHUM-AM in Toronto, whose disinterest contributed to the track's modest No. 49 peak on Canadian charts. In the United States, the single reached No. 67 on the Billboard Hot 100, outranking the band's three previous Hot 100 entries. It remained Chilliwack's last Hot 100 entry until "My Girl (Gone, Gone, Gone)" debuted at No. 81 on 26 September 1981; by 10 October 1981, that song had reached No. 60, surpassing "Arms of Mary" as the band's highest-ranking Hot 100 entry, eventually peaking at No. 22. A live version of "Arms of Mary" appears on There and Back – Live, a 2003 concert album by a latter-day incarnation of Chilliwack fronted by Bill Henderson. In 2022, Henderson stated he no longer had misgivings about the song's inclusion in the Chilliwack oeuvre, calling it "a really nice song" that he enjoys playing.
