Columbia River Gorge

The Columbia River Gorge is a deep canyon carved by the Columbia River in the Pacific Northwest. Reaching depths of up to 4,000 feet, it extends more than eighty miles as the river cuts westward through the Cascade Range, marking the border between Washington to the north and Oregon to the south. This water gap is the only passable route for boats through the Cascades and the sole water link between the Columbia Plateau and the Pacific Ocean. Because of this, Interstate 84, U.S. Route 30, Washington State Route 14, and rail lines on both sides of the river all run through the gorge. It is a popular spot for recreation and is federally protected as the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, overseen by the Columbia River Gorge Commission and the U.S. Forest Service.

The gorge is one of just four rivers—along with the Klamath, Pit, and Fraser—that connect watersheds east of the Cascades to the Pacific. Its elevation drops from 4,000 feet to sea level, and precipitation shifts dramatically from about 100 inches annually in the west to just 10 inches in the east over the same 80-mile stretch. It is especially known for its many waterfalls—over 90 on the Oregon side alone—including the 620-foot Multnomah Falls along the Historic Columbia River Highway. Trails and day-use sites are maintained by the Forest Service and various state parks in Oregon and Washington.

Geologically, the gorge began forming during the Miocene, about 17 to 12 million years ago, and continued through the Pleistocene, from 2 million to 700,000 years ago. As the Cascade Range rose, it slowly pushed the Columbia River’s delta about 100 miles north to its present location. While the river eroded the land gradually over millions of years, the most dramatic changes came at the end of the last ice age, when the Missoula Floods carved the steep, sheer walls seen today, flooding the river as high as Crown Point. Excavations near Celilo Falls, a few miles east of The Dalles, show continuous human occupation at this salmon-fishing site for over 10,000 years. The gorge has served as a transportation corridor for millennia, with Native Americans traveling through to trade at Celilo Falls, both by river and over Lolo Pass on Mount Hood’s north side. In 1805, the Lewis and Clark Expedition used this route to reach the Pacific. Later, European and American settlers built steamboat lines and railroads through the gorge. Today, the BNSF Railway runs freight along the Washington side, while the Union Pacific Railroad operates on the Oregon shore. Until 1997, Amtrak’s Pioneer used the Union Pacific tracks, and the Portland segment of the Empire Builder still runs on the BNSF line through the gorge. The Columbia River Highway, completed in the early 20th century, was the first major paved road in the Pacific Northwest. Shipping became much easier after Bonneville Dam and The Dalles Dam submerged the gorge’s major rapids, including Celilo Falls, which had been a key Native American salmon fishing site until it was flooded in 1957. In November 1986, Congress designated the gorge as the second national scenic area in the United States.
