The Cowboys joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1960. Prior to their formation, there had not been an NFL team south of Washington, D.C. since the Dallas Texans folded in 1952. Oilman Clint Murchison Jr. persisted with his intent to bring a team to Dallas, eventually securing a franchise after purchasing the rights to the Washington Redskins fight song 'Hail to the Redskins' and trading them to Redskins owner George Preston Marshall in exchange for his vote. Murchison hired Tex Schramm as team president and general manager, Gil Brandt as head of player personnel, and Tom Landry as head coach. The Cowboys failed to win a game in their inaugural season. They recorded 20 straight winning seasons from 1966 to 1985, missing the playoffs only twice (1974 and 1984). The team has made it to the Super Bowl eight times, tying for second-most appearances in history, and their eight NFC championships are tied for most in the conference's history.
