Bryce Young is the quarterback Carolina chose with the very first selection of the 2023 NFL draft. Born on July 25, 2001, he came to the Panthers from the Alabama Crimson Tide, where he won the Heisman Trophy in 2021 and threw for a school-best 559 yards in a single game. In 2025 he broke the franchise record for passing yards in one game and steered the team to its first NFC South crown since 2015, earning the club's trust as its long-term starter.

Background

Young was born near Philadelphia and raised mostly in Pasadena, California. At Mater Dei High School he was named California's Gatorade Football Player of the Year after a senior season of 4,528 yards and 58 touchdowns, and he ended his prep career with 13,250 passing yards. He first committed to USC but switched to Alabama in September 2019. After a year as the backup to Mac Jones, he took over in 2021 and put together a season of 4,872 yards and 47 touchdown passes, becoming the first Alabama quarterback to claim the Heisman.

The Panthers had traded with the Chicago Bears to secure the top pick, sending D. J. Moore and other selections, and signed Young to a fully guaranteed four-year deal. His rookie year was hard, as Carolina finished 2–15. He was briefly benched for Andy Dalton early in 2024, then won his job back and closed the year with a 44–38 overtime win over the Falcons. In Week 11 of 2025 he threw for 448 yards against Atlanta, passing the old team mark of 432 set by Cam Newton.
