Trocheck grew up playing minor ice hockey for the Pittsburgh Hornets until age 13, then moved to Detroit with his father to gain attention from scouts. He joined the Detroit Little Caesars AAA team for three seasons before being drafted by the Saginaw Spirit of the OHL in 2009. During his junior career, Trocheck set franchise records for assists with the Spirit and was traded to the Plymouth Whalers in 2013, where he won the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy and Red Tilson Trophy as the OHL's most outstanding player and top scorer. He made his NHL debut with the Florida Panthers in 2014 and later played for the Carolina Hurricanes, becoming a reliable center known for his offensive production and defensive responsibility.
