Sandis Ozoliņš
Latvian offensive defenceman and Stanley Cup champion.
Sandis Ozoliņš, whose name is often written as Sandis Ozolinsh in North America, was born on 3 August 1972. He is a Latvian former professional ice hockey defenceman and coach. Over his career in North America, he was named an NHL All-Star seven times, won the Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche in 1996, and was a finalist for the James Norris Memorial Trophy. Among Latvian players in the NHL, he holds the all-time records for goals, assists, points, and games played. He also owns several franchise records for both the Colorado Avalanche and the San Jose Sharks.
Ozoliņš was selected 30th overall in the second round of the 1991 NHL entry draft by the San Jose Sharks. He played for the Sharks, Colorado Avalanche, Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, and New York Rangers. He is widely seen as a model of the "offensive defenceman," frequently driving his team’s attack and creating scoring chances. Before his NHL career, he played for the Kansas City Blades in the International Hockey League, where he and fellow Latvian Artūrs Irbe won the Turner Cup in 1992.
Ozoliņš joined the Sharks in the 1992–93 season, recording 23 points in 37 games. His rookie year was cut short by a knee injury suffered on December 30, 1992, against the Philadelphia Flyers. The following season, he played all 81 games, scoring 26 goals and 64 points—leading all NHL defencemen in goals. He helped the Sharks reach the conference semifinals in 1994, the first playoff series win in franchise history.
At the start of the 1995–96 season, Ozoliņš held out for a new contract, playing two games for the San Francisco Spiders of the IHL and scoring the first goal in that team’s history. After seven games back with the Sharks (one goal, three assists), he was traded to the Colorado Avalanche on October 26, 1995, in exchange for Owen Nolan. That season, he posted 50 points in 66 games, more than half on the power play, and won the Stanley Cup. The next year, Colorado won the Presidents' Trophy. After the Avalanche lost to the Detroit Red Wings in the 1997 conference final, Ozoliņš finished third in Norris Trophy voting. He set a career high with 68 points that season, second among defencemen behind Brian Leetch. On December 6, 1999, he recorded his first NHL hat trick against the Vancouver Canucks.

The move reunited him with fellow Latvian Artūrs Irbe, with whom he had played in Latvia and San Jose. He signed a five-year contract with Carolina worth more than $25 million. He played one and a half seasons with the Hurricanes before being traded to the Florida Panthers in the 2001–02 season along with Byron Ritchie for Bret Hedican, Kevyn Adams, Tomáš Malec and a draft pick.
Ozoliņš later played for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, helping them reach the 2003 Stanley Cup Final, and also had stints with the New York Rangers and a return to San Jose. He entered the NHL's substance abuse program after a drunk driving arrest. He finished his playing career in the KHL with Dinamo Riga, where he served as captain and set several franchise records as a defenceman.
