Joslin played major junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) for the Ottawa 67's, where he was an All-Star and represented Canada in the Subway Super Series. After finishing his OHL career, he played in the American Hockey League (AHL) for the Worcester Sharks, where he was also an All-Star and won the Hardest Shot Contest at the AHL All-Star Skills Competition with a puck speed of 98.6 mph. He was traded from San Jose to Carolina on February 18, 2011, in exchange for future considerations. After his NHL career, Joslin played in Europe, signing with AIK IF of the Swedish Hockey League, then with Nürnberg Ice Tigers and EHC München of the Deutsche Eishockey Liga, winning two DEL championships with München. He later played for EC Red Bull Salzburg of the Austrian EBEL.

Derek Joslin's NHL career spanned parts of five seasons, during which he played for the San Jose Sharks, Carolina Hurricanes, and Vancouver Canucks.
