Gameplay

The game uses an overhead map similar to Capcom's Bionic Commando series. Players navigate the map and clear sub-stages leading to one of several Cobra bases. Inside a base, the player fights Cobra forces and completes a secondary mission such as rescuing hostages, setting bombs, or locating a key item. Each base stage ends with a battle against a Cobra leader: Overkill, Cesspool, Firefly, Major Bludd, Destro, or Cobra Commander. Six playable characters are available: General Hawk, Roadblock, Wet Suit, Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, and Duke. Only Hawk is usable at the start; others are unlocked by completing stages. Players can decide which characters accompany them and switch between them via the pause menu. Each character has agility, stamina, and strength ratings, though these are not displayed. Gung-Ho, Spirit, and Big Bear can be summoned to refill life or weapon ammunition after being rescued in certain sub-stages. Stalker appears only in cutscenes, coordinating from the G.I. Joe base.
