Gameplay

Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers 2 is a platform game with single and 2-player cooperative modes. Each stage is a side-scrolling action game where Chip and Dale can walk, jump, duck, and pick up objects such as acorns, crates, barrels, and balls to throw at enemies and bosses. Each character can withstand only three direct hits before losing a life, though more hits can be earned. Unlike the first game, there is no map screen; stages are in linear order, except at the amusement park where the first three stages can be played in any order. In a one-player game, the player chooses Chip or Dale; in two-player, Player 1 is Chip and Player 2 is Dale. A new feature allows one player to pick up and throw the other as a weapon.

Plot

The Rescue Rangers catch a news report that a bomb has been set to explode at a local restaurant. Chip, Dale, Gadget, Monterey Jack, and Zipper set off to defuse it. They corner the rabbit responsible, who admits Fat Cat ordered him to do it after breaking out of prison the night before, so Fat Cat can steal the Urn of the Pharaoh from a docked cargo ship. The Rangers give chase to the docks. After searching the ship, Zipper spots Fat Cat running into a warehouse. Chip and Dale follow but are ambushed and locked in a refrigerator to freeze. They escape, but Fat Cat opens the Urn and releases evil spirits. Chip and Dale retrieve the Urn and seal it. Fat Cat challenges them to meet him at the amusement park. After navigating Clock Tower, Western World, and Future World, Chip and Dale unlock the control room, where Fat Cat attacks with a giant robot modeled after himself. They destroy it and chase Fat Cat as the ceiling collapses, but cannot find him and escape. Reunited, the Rangers swear to stop him next time.

Reception

Readers of Family Computer Magazine gave Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers 2 a 19.9 out of 30 in a poll. Critical reception was generally positive. GamePro's Boss Music recommended players fire up their 8-bit systems, complimenting the cheerful music and cute audio, but noted the game was not very difficult, describing it as suitable for novices and intermediate players while being too simple for experts. It was a finalist for GamePro's 1993 NES Game of the Year, but Kirby's Adventure took the prize. Jonathan Gagnon of Game Players called the gameplay straightforward, yet felt it matched earlier Capcom and Disney collaborations with excellent visuals and responsive controls. Mike Weigand of Electronic Gaming Monthly observed that the game looked good for an 8-bit platform and made one long for a 16-bit version.
