Last updated
Albert Leroy "Moose" Marshall is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman who played in the National Hockey League for the Detroit Red Wings, Oakland Seals/California Golden Seals, New York Rangers and New York Islanders.
Playing career
Bert Marshall made his NHL debut as a tough, stay-at-home defenseman with the Detroit Red Wings, known for sending sharp outlet passes to his forwards. His strong rookie performance put him in the running for the Calder Memorial Trophy, and the Red Wings reached the Stanley Cup Final that year, falling to Montreal in six games. After a disappointing season for Detroit, the team traded Marshall and Ted Hampson to the Oakland Seals in 1968 for defenseman Kent Douglas. Marshall’s steady play helped the Seals finish second in the NHL West Division in 1968–69 and fourth the following year.
When the franchise rebranded as the California Golden Seals in 1970–71, Marshall missed significant time due to injury, a factor in the team’s last-place finish. He was dealt to the New York Rangers late in the 1972–73 season but appeared in only eight games. The New York Islanders selected him in the 1973 Intra-League Draft, and there he played his finest hockey. He developed a knack for blocking shots, and his leadership and performance were key as the Islanders advanced to the Stanley Cup semifinals in 1975 and 1976.
His skating slowed by the 1978–79 season, and he announced his retirement on June 12, 1979. Marshall later coached in the minors and took over the NHL’s Colorado Rockies for 24 games in 1981–82 before being fired and replaced by Marshall Johnston. He now resides in Poulsbo, Washington, and works as an amateur scout for the Carolina Hurricanes, with whom he won the Stanley Cup in 2006. On January 7, 2017, he was chosen to drop the ceremonial first puck at a San Jose Sharks game against the Detroit Red Wings, part of a tribute to the Golden Seals.
