He played for Finland's national under-16, under-18, and under-20 teams, and became the youngest player ever to represent Finland at the World Junior Championships. He was selected first overall in the 2011 CHL Import Draft by the London Knights, where he played two seasons, winning back-to-back OHL championships and participating in the Memorial Cup both years. Määttä's NHL career began with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2013–14 after a strong training camp, and he scored his first NHL goal against Roberto Luongo.
