Bouwmeester was born in Edmonton, Alberta, to Dan and Gena Bouwmeester, and has an older sister, Jill. His father, a school teacher and coach, played defence for the University of Alberta Golden Bears. Bouwmeester learned to skate shortly after learning to walk and played baseball, soccer, track, volleyball and basketball as a youth. He played in the 1996 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with an Edmonton minor team. He was selected first overall by the Medicine Hat Tigers at the 1998 WHL Bantam Draft and played three WHL seasons, earning a spot on the WHL East All-Star team. The Panthers selected him third overall in 2002, and he made his NHL debut that season, appearing in all 82 games and scoring his first goal on November 11, 2002, against the Chicago Blackhawks. He was named to the 2003 NHL All-Rookie Team. After seven seasons in Florida, he was traded to the Calgary Flames in 2009 and signed a five-year, $33 million contract. He played four seasons with the Flames, leading the team in ice time and breaking the NHL record for consecutive games played by a defenceman. In 2013, he was traded to the St. Louis Blues, where his iron man streak ended at 737 games in 2014 after a lower-body injury. He was made a healthy scratch for the first time in 2018 after 1,112 career games.
