Eddie Läck
Swedish goaltender who played for four NHL teams.
Eddie Jan Läck, born 5 January 1988, is a Swedish former professional ice hockey goaltender. He worked as an assistant head coach for the Arizona State Sun Devils until 2023 and now works as a real estate agent in the Scottsdale, Arizona area. Nicknamed "The Stork" for his height and long legs, Läck played in Sweden for Leksands IF and Brynäs IF before moving to the NHL, where he suited up for the Vancouver Canucks, Carolina Hurricanes, Calgary Flames, and New Jersey Devils. He went undrafted in 2009 but signed with the Canucks as a free agent in 2010. In his first season with the organization, he was assigned to the Manitoba Moose and earned a spot on the AHL's 2010–11 All-Rookie Team. In October 2024, Läck became a dual American citizen.
Läck grew up playing for his hometown club, Norrtälje IK, and competed in two TV-pucken tournaments with Stockholm's second regional team. He joined Djurgårdens IF's junior system in 2004–05, helping the team win a J18 Allsvenskan silver medal, then moved to Leksands IF at the J20 level two years later. He made his professional debut with Leksands' men's team in the HockeyAllsvenskan during 2006–07, appearing in three games. The next season, he played 26 games in that league with a 1.96 goals against average while also seeing junior time. By 2008–09, he had become Leksands' starter, outperforming former NHL goaltender Ed Belfour, and posted a 2.02 GAA and .930 save percentage over 32 games.
Ranked ninth among European goaltenders by NHL Central Scouting before the 2009 draft, Läck went unselected. He then signed a two-year contract with Brynäs IF of the Elitserien on 6 July 2009. He made his Elitserien debut on 17 October, relieving Jacob Markström late in the first period and stopping all 18 shots he faced in a 3–2 loss to Färjestad BK. He backed up Markström for 14 games that season, recording a 2.67 GAA and .911 save percentage.
Vancouver Canucks scout Lars Lindgren noticed Läck's play, and on 6 April 2010, the Canucks signed him to a two-year entry-level contract. He left Sweden and was assigned to the AHL's Manitoba Moose. He made his AHL debut on 9 October, making 23 saves in a 5–2 win over the Rockford IceHogs.
