Plot

Buffy returns from an offscreen visit with Angel but refuses to discuss it. The Scoobies talk about her future, and she agrees to audit classes Willow and Tara are taking until the next semester begins. Meanwhile, the Trio—Warren, Andrew, and Jonathan—prepare to test Buffy, equipping their van with high-tech monitoring equipment. At school, Buffy is overwhelmed by a class with Willow, baffled by postmodern jargon.

Later, before an Art History class with Tara, Warren tags her with a device that causes time to fast-forward; Buffy is dazed as the world whizzes around her until the device self-destructs, returning her to normal time. Buffy works with Xander at his construction job and tells him about the time incident. Andrew summons demons from the van, which trash the site before Buffy kills them, but she accidentally knocks Tony, the boss, unconscious. The construction men refuse to admit a girl saved them, and Xander fires her.

At the Magic Box, Buffy learns the job from Giles and Anya as Jonathan casts a time-loop spell. Buffy assists a customer with a candle sale, then goes downstairs for a live Mummy's hand, which attacks her; she kills it, ruining the sale. Events repeat as she must help customers and fight the hand repeatedly, reducing her to tears. She ends the spell by telling the woman she will order the hand instead of going downstairs.

Stressed, Buffy walks out. The Trio keep scores on their attacks. Later, Buffy gets drunk with Spike at a bar where he plays poker using kittens as currency. After the game ends badly, Buffy rants about her low life. They notice a black van; the Trio see Buffy approaching with alarm.

Cultural references

The website Women at Warp compares the time-loop situation to the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Cause and Effect," in which the Enterprise repeatedly explodes. The Buffyverse includes a self-aware reference when Andrew says, "I just hope she solves it faster than Data did on the episode of TNG where the Enterprise kept blowing up." Buffy later accompanies Spike to a poker game, a subtle nod to the Enterprise crew's favorite game.

Reception

Vox ranked it #84 in their list of "Worst to Best" episodes, calling it "maybe more clever than genuinely good, but boy, is it clever!" and noting it as "a rare funny episode in a dour season." In 2023, Rolling Stone ranked it #100 out of 144 episodes for the 20th anniversary, describing it as "one of the lighter episodes" with a "very Bond-villain inspired move" that fits the characters and plays for good laughs. TV Tropes notes humor from visual puns, such as the card-game kitty and the Trio's Big Red Button for their Destruct Mechanism.

Creepy effects include the Trio's sousveillance via hidden cameras and an "Unnaturally Looping Location" where Buffy exits the Magic Shop only to re-enter from the back. Reviewer Mark Oshiro writes that the episode is funny but does not ignore how disturbing or taxing the tests are for Buffy. He praises the accuracy of the portrayal of bored, white middle-class nerds who bicker in a condescending, know-it-all tone. The Trio reference a Star Trek episode and an X-Files episode instead of Groundhog Day.

Oshiro states that the Trio treat Buffy as an object and an obstacle, tormenting her for an entire day, and that their combination of misogyny and carelessness makes them frightening.
