Planed Plant

Welsh-language children's television strand on S4C.

Last updated

Planed Plant ("Children's Planet") was a strand of Welsh-language television programming for children broadcast by S4C. It first aired in September 1998, succeeding earlier children's services such as Y Clwb S4C, Slot Meithrin, Slot 23, and 5 Pump. The strand included imported animated programmes dubbed into Welsh, as well as Welsh-produced content, and won a Bafta Cymru in 2003 for its graphics and titles.

Background

Planed Plant aired on S4C from 16:00 to 17:00 on analogue and from 16:00 to 18:00 on digital, Monday through Friday. Its lineup mixed Welsh-made shows with imported cartoons like Yu-Gi-Oh!, Sabrina, Horseland, and Dennis and Gnasher, all redubbed in Welsh. Until April 2005, the youth magazine Uned 5 often appeared as part of the block before shifting to a later slot.

In-house production ran until 26 October 2007, when independent company Boomerang took over. This switch brought a new presenting team: Geraint Hardy and Meleri Williams replaced Alex Jones, Mari Grug, and Alun Williams for the older children’s 4–6 pm strand. Williams left after eleven months, with Lois Cernyw and Tudur Phillips stepping in.

A preschool version, Planed Plant Bach, existed from 14 October 1998 (initially called Planed Plant until December 2001) until 22 April 2008. Both blocks were eventually retired: Planed Plant Bach gave way to Cyw on 23 June 2008, and Planed Plant itself was succeeded by Stwnsh in 2010.
