The arena opened on September 30, 1995, after construction began on April 29, 1993, and cost $160 million. It was originally slated to open as the Shawmut Center, but a merger led to the name FleetCenter. In 2005, naming rights were sold to TD Banknorth, and the arena was renamed TD Banknorth Garden, later shortened to TD Garden in July 2009. The naming rights deal was extended in January 2023 through June 2045.
