Legend states that Hagoromo Otsutsuki, the Sage of Six Paths, possessed this eye originally. Madara later had his Rinnegan transplanted into Nagato, to be kept until his own revival. In the Boruto era, new variations appeared among Otsutsuki clan members like Momoshiki and Isshiki. Momoshiki's Rinnegan sit on his palms, where he uses them to absorb and release ninjutsu.
