Otsutsuki Clan

Celestial harvesters using Karma to resurrect and Shinjutsu to dominate dimensions.

In the Boruto manga, they serve as the primary antagonists, with members like Momoshiki and Kinshiki arriving to revitalize their dying Divine Tree using the Nine-Tailed Fox sealed within Naruto Uzumaki. Kaguya Ōtsutsuki came to Earth with Isshiki millennia ago and betrayed him. The clan's influence reshapes the ninja world through the Karma mark, a device allowing them to resurrect via host bodies. As the story progresses into the second part, titled Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, the threat evolves with the revelation of Shinjutsu, divine abilities transcending ninjutsu. Characters like Isshiki and Momoshiki drive the plot by manipulating events from within human vessels, forcing protagonists to confront enemies who view humanity merely as resources for their own survival.

Lore & Background

The origin of the Otsutsuki on Earth traces back to Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, who arrived millennia ago. There she betrayed Isshiki, who went on to possess Jigen. Centuries later, Momoshiki and Kinshiki Ōtsutsuki returned, abducting Naruto Uzumaki to use Kurama as fuel for their dying Divine Tree. Before his death, Momoshiki placed a mark called "Karma" on Boruto Uzumaki.

Amado revealed that Karma allows the clan to resurrect via a host's body. This mechanic was central when Isshiki Ōtsutsuki possessed Jigen, who had been under his control since Kaguya's betrayal. Additionally, Amado explained that Shinjutsu are divine abilities more powerful than ninjutsu, transplanted from the remains of Shibai Ōtsutsuki, an Otsutsuki who achieved godhood and transcended to another plane. The clan's hierarchy includes guardians like Code, who was tasked by Isshiki to carry on their will after his death.

Code later released powerful cyborgs Eida and Daemon, created from Shibai's remains, to further the clan's objectives against the ninja world.

Reader's Guide

Isshiki's plan was to sacrifice a vessel to the Ten-Tails and eat the Chakra Fruit it bears, becoming a new Ōtsutsuki who would go on devouring planets until he reached godhood. In the Boruto series, this involves using Karma-marked vessels like Jigen (host to Isshiki) and Boruto to ensure resurrection if their physical bodies are destroyed. Key figures include Momoshiki, who seeks to revitalize his dying tree; Isshiki, who manipulates events from within Jigen's body until his death; and Code, the guardian tasked with carrying on Isshiki's will.

The clan utilizes Shinjutsu, abilities derived from Shibai Ōtsutsuki, which surpass traditional ninjutsu. To counter them, protagonists must navigate complex alliances and betrayals. Through Eida's Omnipotence, everyone's memories are rewritten so that Boruto is branded the killer of his father. The only unaffected individuals are Sumire Kakei and Sarada Uchiha, who work with Sasuke to expose the truth.

Understanding that Karma allows resurrection is crucial, as physical defeat does not guarantee safety against Otsutsuki members.
